In Bulgarian Romania is spelled Rumaniya. We don't call the Nomadic Indians "Roma" because Rom is how we spell the drink Rum. It is not a Romania/Bulgaria problem the "Roma" name. Italy should protest for the name appropriation.

The second school I went to 1/3 of the kids were gypsies, I also lived right next to the gypsy mahal. Nobody, but nobody ever knew about any "Roma"! They said - "We are gypsies" and they loved to watch Indian movies, they understand them. This name change to "Roma" is from the late 90s - early 2000s. Somebody in EU decided to create a "new" ... "nation" out of the Nomadic Rajasthanis in Europe and anoint them "eternal victims".

@tasbykekerey1203 Q and C in English are the redundant Ks nobody asked for. Greek and Latin are the only alphabets that I know which have multiple characters for the same sounds. As a result, learning to spell in English, French, Greek, etc., is very cumbersome. There are also many characters missing in both Latin and Greek for sh, ch, yu, yo, ya, er., etc. When we created the Bulgarian alphabet (named in honour of Kiril, "Kirilitsa") we tried to avoid all this confusion and tried to add all the missing sounds. We enforce very rigid and unambiguous pronunciation too, like in Finish or Japanese. Languages like Dutch or Arabic are very hard to parse into any writing system. The Bulgarian alphabet is as good for Turkic languages as it gets. The Runes are magic shaman symbols. They gave birth to modern alphabets.

They also constantly get aid. Poor Bulgarians could go to hell but for the gypsies there is always aid and care. I have solution for your heartache over the Roma! Where are you from? Take them to your country, try to look after them and call them whatever you like - "Romans", "Greeks", "Vikings"...whatever! ...and ofcourse, don't forget to write, to tell us how you went - we will need the laughs.

@concertosunpalatableopinio2905 Well it would take some digging and research to trace who invented the idea, but as far as "Roma" being a thing before the 90, it is absolutely untrue. You can ask any East European old enough they will tell you that it was unheard of.

@sapphyrus Not any of my business but Bulgarian alphabet would be better for you than Latin. Most Turkic languages use it. It is easier to write, all those particular sounds have their own letters so there is no confusion.
