When we moved to the West from Bulgaria, in the middle of the Cold War, I didn't have to learn a single new thing. All the obedience mechanisms were in place and identical - I didn't have to learn to say one thing in public, endorse the official lies with fake enthusiasm, but say completely another thing among very close circle of friends. I didn't have to learn to be vigilant for snitches and back-stabbers at work or in the brotherhood, Stasi culture was alive and thriving in the West. The only thing that was different - the money was better and the shops offered more choice.

  29.  @gillwil  Try an oil lamp. Used oil is easy to get for free. You can make one very easy, fill a cup with oil, make a wick float from wine cork by cutting a section and make a hole to run the wick through. One bottle of oil will keep you lighted for month.
