If he was beaten, they managed not to break his bones. The U.S. doctors say there is no evidence of broken bones or any that have healed.

North Korea is a country where torture of prisoners is done with public knowledge to instill fear. It's a country where some of the leader's OWN FAMILY MEMBERS have disappeared because he was dissatisfied with them. Saying that Otto Warmbier brought it on himself is NOT saying that North Korea's actions aren't insane. Anyone who goes there has chosen to take an unreasonable risk BECAUSE North Korea is insane. People who say the punishment doesn't fit the crime, are being obtuse. Hello? You are talking about North Korea. The punishment NEVER fits the crime there. This is a country where they send criminals to work in back-breaking labor for years and years AND they sentence their whole family right down to their grandchildren to heavy labor. They have a history of punishing three generations of a family, though only one person is convicted of a crime. Otto Warmbier's parents were offended when they asked our government for help, because the first question they were asked is if they had read the State Department blog before letting their son go. They said they felt blamed. But isn't it a fair question to ask if they knew that Americans are detained and imprisoned there on a regular basis? One American was detained merely for leaving a bible on a table, for God's sake. Like you said, everyone feels sorry for the horrific situation, but it was also an enormous risk that should never have been taken. God only knows what they did to him to put him into a coma.

Just saw a video that Otto said in the North Korea court that he was offered a used car worth $10,000 if he brought back a poster (I knew that), and that his parents would received $200,000 if he did not come back! I didn't know the second part. And evidently his parents were having money issues. Someone needs to look into this to see if it's true!

North Korea sent MRI scans to the doctors in the U.S. I believe the scans were done in the spring of 2016. The U.S. doctors said it was clear that something had happened in the weeks before the scan. Something cut off the blood supply to his brain and he lost a lot of brain tissue. He's been in a coma or near-come for about a year. North Korea said he had botulism, but there is no evidence of it now. There was no evidence of broken bones and he was well-nourished. It's a real mystery.
