I do know of someone who had a daughter who became depressed when they hit puberty. They eventually came to the parents and said they were a boy. HOWEVER, this child had shown signs of this since they were old enough to speak. As soon as the girl could speak and express an opinion, she said she only wanted to wear "action clothes"; not dresses. She played on boy's sports teams and otherwise truly acted completely like a boy from a very young age. The parents never pushed one way or the other. In this case the medical transition to being a boy was a complete success. The depression lifted and he went through high school and college successfully and happily. Clearly, there really are some people who need to transition. I don't think it's the answer for everyone, especially when they've shown no prior signs. The medical community needs guidelines on this that screen kids better.

@XenoSpyro Oh, I think it went way beyond "tomboy". Tomboys are usually a mix whereas this child did absolutely nothing associated with girls. Tomboys don't become depressed just because they hit puberty. The bottom line is that it was the right decision for them. It's the sudden interest in changing that is cause for concern, and this wasn't sudden.
