I grew up in Miami mostly in the 1960s and 1970s. I left in the mid-1980s. When I was in elementary school in the 60s, is when the main influx of Cubans took place. Those tended to be educated Cubans. They were smart enough to figure out their best bet for getting ahead was to start their own small businesses. It seemed like every Cuban family I knew owned a successful small business. They really hit the ground running. The Mariel boat lift was a real disaster for Miami. There were many good Cubans that came over then, but the criminals that Castro forced to come created a horrific crime wave. The criminals were nothing like the Cubans we were used to. Overall, I can say that Cubans are definitely entrepreneurs in general. They've become a major force in the political structure of South Florida. Many offspring of the first Cubans to arrive have gone on to prestigious careers. I traveled back to Miami in 2005 because my grandmother was dying. There were lots of Cuban doctors and nurses working in the hospital, which did not exist when I was growing up. There are plenty of rich Cubans at the top of the social heap today. They are very family-oriented and support their children's success.

You know what's rich? All the people who were up in arms about children in cages sleeping under foil blankets who've become strangely silent. They didn't really care.

The crime rate in Atlanta really spiked during Covid-19. Atlanta was always known for extremely reasonable housing for a big city, but housing prices have skyrocketed even more than elsewhere because of investors buying up housing stock.

@josephcote7405 Yeah, Texas has the most unreasonable landlord/tenant laws in the country totally in favor of the landlord. They literally can give a tenant one day to move out.

Passing women around like they are objects is disgusting. Children are collateral damage.

@ladyaly864 Interesting. I had no idea. My family is no longer in South Florida except for one person.

They were talking about saving and restoring the buildings in Miami Beach back in the 1970s. I remember when it was still a question whether they'd pull it off, but man did they.

Pimps are parasites. They can't even support themselves without controlling and oppressing women. I never think of them as real men.

I live in the North Georgia mountains. One of the saddest things I heard, is that locals used to fish in any river no matter whose property it ran though. Newcomers built houses next to waterways, and the old fishing traditions were labeled as "trespassing"! 🙁

A lot of Michigan is a hidden gem. The resort towns in Upper Michigan along the Great Lakes and Mackinac Island are incredibly charming.

I grew up in Florida and moved away. None of the other states I've lived in have felt quite as laid back as Florida.

Matheson Hammock has always had a different look than most Miami beaches. There's plenty of nice sand on the beaches of Key Biscayne if you're looking for finer sand. Could not believe he said to dredge it.
2
@lobacotable I kept thinking he should be using native coral rock instead of stone from elsewhere.
2
@Alpha Omega Not surprised!

This is the kind of thing every American needs to know.

I've never been to Burlington, Vermont, but I'm old enough to remember when it was touted as a bit of a utopia . . . same as Portland, Oregon.
2
As someone who grew up in Florida, I'm always amazed by how ugly Venice Beach is as far as beaches go.
2
Go look at Oakland.

When was this filmed? House prices in Atlanta have gone through the roof in the last year or so.

@nataliasantenello Thank you!

The kid with the barbecue is something!

The overall populations in California and Florida have polar opposite views of life.

I have relatives who moved to Illinois because of job transfers. The property tax was insane, especially when they already had a state income tax to pay. They moved out of Illinois as soon as their jobs allowed them to work at home.
1
@NoName-ot8kl I don't think I would. I'm in the mountains now and it's also laid back, but in a totally different way. If I did move back, it might be to the Panhandle where the most beautiful water and sand are.

What's with all the graffiti on such gorgeous buildings?

We wear our masks in Georgia, but we're not looking at each other with that hostility. California will never stop being California. smh.

Aren't they beautiful?
1
He isn't kidding that they were suffering more 20 and 30 years ago. The old guidebooks on Western North Carolina used to lament that though there was a good Cherokee museum and a good historic drama (Unto These Hills) in Cherokee, the rest was depressing shops selling crummy souvenirs that weren't authentic. The area was always beautiful, but it's great to see the situation for natives improve so much.

Well, this was weird. I grew up in Miami in the 1960s and 1970s - moved away in the 1980s. I am familiar with Brickell Avenue, Coral Gables, Miracle Mile, and Coconut Grove. There was so much disinformation and hyperbole from the architect.

I agree. She is very self-aware and a good observer.
1
She got one thing wrong. The historical plaques are actually made up to lend a sense of history to the place. They are pure fantasy.
