  1. He isn't kidding that they were suffering more 20 and 30 years ago. The old guidebooks on Western North Carolina used to lament that though there was a good Cherokee museum and a good historic drama (Unto These Hills) in Cherokee, the rest was depressing shops selling crummy souvenirs that weren't authentic. The area was always beautiful, but it's great to see the situation for natives improve so much.
