In the 1960s and 1970s, there were only so many radio stations per city. So everyone was listening to the same songs on the same few stations. It had the effect of making daily life seem like it had a distinct sound track. Plus, we weren't distracted by hundreds of stations, so we could listen more deeply. There was more competition among musicians for those few outlets, which resulted in higher quality.

My generation knows this without a study, because our ears haven't fallen off. Today's music is less creative. You have to wait for the good tunes now. We never had to wait.
