It was way more profitable for them to buy abroad and don't pay the extra tariffs into the UK , especially when your import goes to the biggest port in Europe named Rotterdam port already. You would need to set up a new trade route and pay extra tariffs. Way easier to move your business to the EU, certainly if you had a office in the EU and Britain already.
