I am 55 and have been on both sides of the rope. My dad was a master mechanic for over 50 years before he died. he taught me all I know about fixing cars . I worked with him from the age of 8 and at 15 I was rebuilding engines and transmission. He worked for union and nonunion during his life . he went on strike a few times and the owner wanted me to come in and cross the line as I was just 14 which was illegal, Needless to say, I did not and I was not allowed to help my dad anymore I went to work in a coal mine under ground for 6 years. The strike there was different it was about living or dying under ground. I walked the line for 5 weeks and had saved up money for problems like this. I was making $20.00 an hour but strike pay was just $12.00 . A lot of guys could not live off that so the strike always ended sooner than it should have. I ended up going in the NAVY at 24 and was to be in for 30 but made it 7 as I got hurt bad left me with no legs . On the sub I was on you go out 70 days or so under water and work an 18-hour shift 6 on watch 6 hours fixing and some sleep then 6 sleeping or other things . Some times at least you are up 32 hours at a time.
