The influence of South Africa in the region and it's connection with the BRICS nation and the close relationship of these newly formed governments with Russia makes it a very important asset for both Russia and China. Russia and China, being dictatorial regime with vast resources, they have the capability to intervene there with a fraction of the cost that the West must pay. Bigger return over investment. And it's very simple how, first by supplying arms, and if necessary, supplying troops. ECOWAS nations aren't fighting for anything, they're intervening in their neighbor business, if met with fierce resistance, they will leave.
