The analysis is mostly correct, but it neglects how Commodus realize the uselessness of the so called "Senate". The Senate in this movie isn't wise or pure or good, they're overly privileged people who pretend to be pure and good. This is explained thoroughly when Commodus talks to Lucilla about this "greatness of Rome". It's a fake idea, a vision not substantial in any means, but the people love it, and even his predecessor did it for no reason. "The war in Germainia achieved nothing", yet Marcus Aurelius and his allies in the senate still waged it, what is this purpose if it's not to grand people an illusion? And if Commodus father did so for like 20 years? Why can't he? At least Commodus realize that the people are tools he uses to gain some for himself. His predecessors and these so called senators lie to themselves.
