This is very true! I went to a large university and a mid-sized state college. The university had WIDE sidewalks and bike racks everywhere. They also had buses on loops that passed by every 15-25 minutes, and you just stepped on and found a seat. No money required. The state college was fully walkable (once I drove there for the day, being a commuter student). Both places had outdoor and indoor places to sit, relax, study or socialize. They had places to buy food and schools supplies. The university had more amenities with a pool hall, an arcade, a non-cafeteria restaurant or two, and multiple libraries.

A bus has the physical footprints of 2-3 cars. Three cars can seat around 15 people, though they usually only seat one per car. One municipal bus can seat 25-30 people. - Ergo, buses are a better use of road by area.

@crixxxxxxxxx Trains get crowded when the system does not expand capacity to fit rising trends of ridership. If a couple owns a two-seat coupe and get married, it's the two of them in a two-space car. When they start having kids, do they complain about the overcrowding in the little sports car? No, they get a second car or a car with more capacity. - Public transport works well when it is willing to spend effort and money and adding capacity. It works poorly when their answer to overcrowding is on-board announcements to be courteous and please be understanding while they try and get the stalled train running again. (I'm looking at YOU NYC!)

@ano_nym What stops us from taking a bike or walking. Well, sprawl limits what is available to a reasonable walking distance. Lack of bike lanes and dangerous intersections make using a bicycle a game of Russian roulette with every ride, and sometimes (like "rush" hours) the pistol is fully loaded.
