  1. Every car I've owned over the last 20 years, one of the first things I do is look up the oil type, amount and the filter number. Then I write those data on the engine cover with a yellow paint marker. This has helped me time and again, and one mechanic even thanked me for having the information so visible.

  6. Not a bad fix for an easily-accessed part on an older car! - If it was a newer vehicle, or one with a lot of expected life left, or a part much harder to get to, replacing with new makes more sense. - But at least your suggestions gives more choices, and that can be good for the budget.

  11.  @hightttech  Yeah, crystals can only be marginally diagnosed with a multi-meter. Sure, you'll find an open or short, but most other failure modes are opaque without an oscilloscope.

  15. This si the first video where I really noticed how well sited the shop is for various types of test drives. Surface roads, stop signs and stop lights, and highway access - all within a very short distance!

  17. I miss my local model train shop. The guy was a retiree running it out of his garage and basement and was the best source for Tamiya models of military vehicles. He passed away some years ago.

  18.  @DatsunBloke7357  Some people can't do their own oil changes. It could be physical limitations, it could be time limitations, and it could be they rent and their lease/rental agreement forbids servicing their car in the parking lot (or they only have on-street parking).

  23.  @ryans413  Way back in the day, before evap systems, when gasoline had lead added, "topping off" did no harm besides spilling that lovely toxic mixture on the ground. Some older people still think that topping off is a harmless procedure, and we get what he have here today.

  24. I had that experience once when my 1974 VW Beetle ate it's transmission, and I bought a 1971 VW Beetle with a good transmission but only half of an engine. We had no engine hoist, so we used two strong teens, a 4x4 and high-strength rope to lift it - and a skateboard to move the engine from one car to the other. Took about a week of afternoons and the two bookending weekends to finish the job, but it ran and drove great!* - *Until the undetected frame rot of the 1971 Beetle made itself known about three weeks later and that car shimmied like a hula dancer at any speed over 20MPH.

  26. I have a nice scar on my right thumb from a slipping wrench when I was in a stupid hurry to install brand new blades on a professional grade woodchipper. I learned three things: 1) the new blades are shipped razor sharp. 2) a cut to the bone bleeds a lot. 3) a clean cloth and duct tape makes a decent compression dressing!

  28. That is an ORGANIZED and detail-oriented customer! So much better than someone who drops off the car and says, "Something's making noise, please fix it." - I don't keep the same level of detail as that vehicle's owner, but I do type up a symptoms list and leave a cop on the dash for the mechanic. - One time, on my Saturn, I went DEEP into the woods chasing a lack of low-beams. I spent about four hours with a Haynes manual, matching real wiring to the wiring diagram, doing continuity checks all over the place... It turned out there was a burnt-out connection in the plastic-coated parts of the fuse block. I determined that the low beam circuit could be replaced by the DRL (Daytime Running Lights) circuit. The only reason I handed the job off to a mechanic was a lack of tools. The mechanic actually thanked me for not making him do all the wire chasing, and that I saved a LOT of money doing that myself.

  31. Yep. If the frame, suspension and transmission are fin, and the job needed is even a big resealing job it is worth it. If that was a 400,000 mile car up here in the salt belt, the answer would be in much more doubt.

  33.  @robertpage2023  Fair enough. But do yourself a favor and spend the extra couple of dollars to get Gorilla Tape. That stuff will stick nearly permanently, even if you want it to come off later. And it holds up to UV exposure a lot better.

  46. I had a 1971 VW Beetle that had an air-pressure operated windshield washer fluid system that tapped off the spare tire. Well, except that the rubber lines on the one I bought had long-ago rotted out, so my windshield washer fluid dispenser was a Windex spray bottle, and I had to roll down the window and reach around the A pillar to spray the windshield. Also, the heat ducts from the rear-mounted engine to the passenger compartment were rusted away to nonexistence. So, no heat, and an ice scraper was often used on the INSIDE of the windows as well. Fun little beater.

If playing back on a computer, the arrow keys will fast jump you beyond the parts that are boring to you, I believe a few seconds at a time.

  50. Based on "Just Rolled In" frame welds are supposed to include small plate patches, bits of steel chain, old open-end wrenches, perforated angle iron, chicken wire, and a liberal amount of spray foam.
