If I buy a phone, computer, t-shirt, chair, or farm tractor, and I have no outstanding balance, it is MY damned item, and I can do what I want to and with it (other than litter or give direct harm to others). - And it is not just that farmers are locked out of the computers on the machines they bought, but that lockout can deadline the entire machine until an expensive company tech shows up, eventually (could be days to weeks), to plug in their special laptop and give permission to run that half-million dollar machine again. Meanwhile, their crops might be rotting in the field.

  9. My ideal home location would be a compact 1,500 square feet of AFFORDABLE living space up against many acres of park and forest shared by the other housing boxes nearby. Near a grocery store and public transit. I may have to move out of the US to see my dream.

  10.  @11bornrich  Some Aspen residents are still lucky enough to have inherited housing in the mountain town in which their family grew up. The rest have to commute hours to get to a job that barely pays enough for their share of housing and groceries. edit: Then there are the rich carpetbaggers...

  11. The only things I've ever bought at a Dollar Store (or other Dollar retailer) is a specific type of foam posterboard that has paper that easily peels off, and some plastic toy animals. I use the foam board for crafting for table-top RPG games, and the plastic animals as gaming miniatures for the same games. I buy the foam board there because they are the only one carrying the type that has easy-peel paper.

  19.  @dungeondeezdragons  Voting is the LEAST engagement one can have with their government. Holding those you elect accountable, keeping issues in the light, sharing your findings with others... Those are more involved methods without taking a lot of your time and effort. - If you REALLY want to make an impact, BE the elected representative. Or go to town meetings and bring up your issues in a proper manner (not shouting at the top of your lungs). All politics starts local. Sure your town meeting doesn't have a lot of power over the deployment of USN carrier fleet groups, but they do have a lot of impact on the conditions of your roads, availability of emergency services, your libraries schools and parks.

  21.  @Teixas666  Electric trolleys are an old, but low-pollution solution for dense city areas. Some train lines are transitioning (back?) to the technology to reduce or eliminate the use of on-board fuel or energy sources. And some passenger rail systems have been that way for decades or longer.

  30. Stuff like this makes me glad my state had a unit pricing law. That means there have to be shelf labels for each item that list the price per weight/volume/count so a shopper with even half a brain can compare and contrast, and make the decision as to which brand (or store brand) and package size to purchase without having to bring a calculator along on the shopping trip. This also means it is really easy to see how Dollar stores are overcharging by selling tiny packages for a dollar or so versus the larger package at a WalMart or convenience store or grocery store.

  41. I grew up with some SCARY space heaters, essentially open-faced toasters. Thus, I am so paranoid about space heaters that I double the clear space the directions specify. I'll even turn them completely off if I leave or am going to sleep. Yeah, I overdo it, but remember than many of the space heaters being sold are made in China...

  47. I buy one thing at my local Dollar (whatever). Redi-Board. It's a foam poster board that has the paper layer that is easy to peel off. This is the only one like that I have found, and is a great material for my TTRPG crafting.
