I saw a (History Channel?) show on EA Poe. Based on some contemporary (meaning of the time) sources, Poe was not so much a heavy drinker, more that he had a rare condition where a little bit of alcohol had a disproportional effect on him. The story that he was a drunk and a drug user was part of a pattern of lies by Rufus Wilmot Griswold, who had a massive grudge with our Poe.
