  1.  @Froggability  I call it anti-repair pricing. Apple laptop - replace cracked screen (at Apple store) $750. New computer $900 - repair blocked for independent shops by refusing to sell special tools, data sheets, schematics and parts.

  2. My window AC's are SO DANGED loud that I have taken to watching the TV with subtitles on. That heat pump is so quiet, it would be unlikely to wake a lightly dozing baby near a window just above it, even if the window was open for some weird reason.

  3.  @Anya-Prime  I think the bars to using water as a refrigerant are: 1) The temperature/energy needed to reach vaporization is really high. 2) The pressure differential when water turns to steam is quite high and dangerous if there are any weaknesses in the pressure vessel. See exploded locomotives for examples. 3) The higher heat capacity of water requires even more radiator material to shed that heat, unless you are ONLY shedding heat, then you can just dump it "overboard" from your system and use up more clean water for your heat exchanger.

  5.  @planesandbikes7353  Not a bad outlook. The only advice I would add is to regularly (annually?) check the condition of the fuel in the tank, and use appropriate fuel stabilizer products. No sense buying a bunch of home heating fuel and having to pump it out a couple of years later because it broke down into other products. Yeah, it's more an issue with volatiles like gasoline and kerosene, but even diesel (a.k.a. home heating oil plus road taxes) can degrade over time.

  8.  @razvanlex  I realize now that my earliest reply in this thread made the assumption that using water for a refrigerant would necessarily mean bringing the water to steam temperature. That was a bad assumption. I had the water/steam cycle of power generation systems in my mind when I was typing that, not thinking about the much less severe temperature differences in a typical forced hot water systems (radiators/baseboard units) for home heating.

  12. As a renter in New England, insulating and window quality are two everlasting gripes that will not get solved under current financial regimens. When the tenant pays for heat, but the building owner is the one who decides if/when/how to insulate, it almost never gets done. Often, only the exterior wall pockets with plumbing will get insulated at all, since frozen pipes and the damage they can cause hit the property owner in the wallet.

  13.  @patd4u2  Regarding the pre-charged systems, I have seen a couple of ads here on YouTube from a company selling pre-charged quick-connect lines for mini-splits and heat pump systems. I never finished the commercials, so I don't know any brand name, just that the product exists.
