  1. Fun story: When I was a kid, I used to think that the dishwasher filled up completely, or at least halfway, like an aquarium, and it would flood the kitchen if I opened the door.

  2.  @Orinslayer  I've never had that specific problem, but we did once have the fill line burst from freezing because the wall behind that part of the kitchen was essentially uninsulated, like almost all of the house. In Massachusetts. - The house was OLD and built when heating a home and losing most of it through the walls was cheap enough that insulating was not worth it. - Anywho, the burst hose resulted in the kitchen flooring having to be replaced because the floor got saturated and the linoleum lifted from the warping wood.

  3.  @CyberlightFG  This is why I am glad my state has a consumer law that mandates unit pricing on shelf labels in retail stores. When I see videos of states without them, it kind of blows my mind.

  4. Something else I found about the packs versus powder. When the packs got damp (bad seal on the bag), I ended up with a huge clump of packs stuck together and coming apart. When a box of powder detergent gets damp, you can break it up by squeezing or striking the box, or in sever cases, cutting open the box, putting the powder in a different container, and breaking it up with a butter knife or screwdriver.

  5.  @CyberlightFG  It can be tricky for some comparison, agreed. But at least you know if buying a 14 ounce bag of brand A dried kidney beans is a better or worse deal than a 16 ounce bag of brand B dried kidney beans.

  6. When I did live with a dishwasher, the one setting I would never use was heat dry. Instead, I would just set the door ajar after the cycle was complete, letting the steam help humidify and (beneficially in the winter) heat my apartment. If I caught it right after the end of the cycle, the heat of the water, all of the dishes (that did not upend and catch water, grumble...) would be dry in about half an hour. - I did try those packs, and found them to work, but be a little more expensive on a loads/dollar basis. Which you covered When I experimented with the (Walmart store brand) gel, after the first two loads which I had to hand wash again, I threw the rest away. - And by coincidence, I do not have a dishwasher in my current place, but I do have a small bag of cookies here on my desk!
