Good luck pushing the blue whale to the finishing line! (comment on the inertia of large organizations, not a fat joke.)

So... a contactor is essentially a high-current relay.

I could also see a future where car ownership reduces. Let me sum up. With more self-driving cars, and the invention/implementation of an automated "plugging in" device, I can envision densely populated areas with companies that own, route, rent and dispatch cars for people who need a vehicle infrequently, such as retired people or a stay-at-home parent who needs a vehicle to do occasional errands. Much like many cities now have short-term rentals of bicycles/scooters/etc. I see the idea as either a replacement for, or supplemental business of cab companies, but not a replacement for bus and passenger rail with their larger rider capacity on regular routes. Perhaps even a "last mile" automated ride-share solution for people who love some distance from a mass transit stop?

@LG123ABC I agree that my scenario will not work for everyone. I drive my car 2-4 days a week, and more than half of those trips are within a town or two for shopping or local appointments. But someone who drives several times daily, with a work commute, kids' activities, shopping, appointments, and such would not do well with a car-sharing program. - And the current work-arounds of car rentals and Uber/Lyft/cabs is too expensive for all but the most infrequent travelers or those with enough money to own a vehicle, but no care to do so.

Your idea for the electric utilities to get in the car charging game is smart. But it won't happen. Instead, they'll just let other companies do the installs, pay the rates, and upcharge the end-users. Because large organizations are quite often slow-moving.
