I moved from the countryside to a small city and the best appartment i found was a "gated community" consisting of a fence around the building grounds that is mostly parkinglot. Being a gated community results in lower rent because it increases trust in the residents to not trash the place. Also they pay for heat in CT and most of the other places you paid for electric heat (hairdryer resistive heat) so the rent looks lower but is going to jump in the winter. Personally i would be fine with living in a non-gated community, but i was raised in an area where for a long time you didn't lock your doors, and some still only lock the front door. Moving to a city was a culture shock to see homeless on the street and i don't know how urban areas aren't ashamed to have people living in such situations. (Fix the problem, don't install anti homeless spikes)
