He was not "a slave trader". He was a merchant who was also involved in slave trade. He has however done a lot to his home city of Bristol, and donated a lot for charity, so his statue was rightfully there.

@CRHall-ud9mq EVERY person that has ever lived perpetrated human suffering, woman! Human life is suffering. The world is an imperfect place populated by imperfect people. Every attempt to build a society that would be perfect and just to everyone ended up with guillotines and firing squads. The way to live is to find meaning in your suffering and beauty in the world, imperfect as it is. Colston may have been a slave trader — God save his soul — but he donated to charity and sponsored many magnificent buildings in Bristol.

Bassman Njie you see, most today's Russians are distant descendants of serfs. And serfdom in Eastern Europe was rather harsh, so many Slavic peasants lived pretty much like slaves to the landowners. Having said that, I can't imagine Russians toppling statues of our great statesmen, philanthropists or war heroes just because some of them had serfs or treated them badly. Additionally, even though the Russian Empire was a toddler compared to the British in how the two empire treated native tribes, some non-Russian parts of Russia faced some harsh treatment by Russian governors or generals, but then again, it is all our history, we respect these people for what they did to our country, not for their being good or bad people.

@SuperBerya Why care about slaves these people owned CENTURIES ago? Slavery was not as detested back then than it is now. The distributions this people did to the society however live on today. If these people care so much about slaves, they should travel to the third-world shitholes like Sudan, many black African countries, Afghanistan and so on and fight slavery there. The locals are already preparing vapes and vegan meals for the protesters.
