In short, Uluru was formed by pressure, once upon a time Australia had limestone mountains that formed when it had an inland sea, below was iron clad sand, the pressure of the mountain formed solid rock out of the sand, as time passed and the water went away, the soft limestone eroded leaving behind the red rocks and sand we see today. Also, it was allowed to be climbed but recently has been banned. The indigenous people hold it sacred and want it's integrity preserved.
