Also, no, the stars are not bright as you may have been lead to believe, you need to get very far away from anywhere to see the stars in full glory, Karijini NP in WA is one, Kalgoorlie/boulder is also another, last time I was there I witnessed a meteor shower, the out back is where it is at if you want to see things.

  2. Yes we do get taught about the outback, if you were to be taken out and dumped in the middle of woop woop with nothing, you will die, you will survive 3 days, if you're lucky. As for where, it could be anywhere, as soon as you get away from the coast, A lot of the time only 100km from home, it is like that, no joke, inland Aussie is no place for the faint hearted,
