Singapore has been ruled by authoritarian single-party PAP for its entire life as nation. The People's Action Party ruled Singapore for over 50 years and Lee Kuan Yew (Singapore founder) was dictator who jailed and exiled dissidents to his rule. Isn't similar to China, being ruled by CCP for 70 years?

@kelvinpang438 False statement? I never said anything about "elections" so how is my statement false? Look at North Korea and they hold elections where they vote for Kim Jong Un too isn't it?

@theblackdeath4398 Do the modern Egyptians understand Egyptian Hieroglyphs? Or do the Italians understand Latin? Or the Iranians understand Sumerian Cuneiform? Even today, Chinese kids can understand passages from thousand-year-old Chinese books like Sun Zi's The Art of War 《孙子兵法》 and The Analects of Confucius 《论语》 for example.

@wheresmyeyebrow1608 Ancient Chinese nobility wore luxurious silk clothing since 4th millennium BCE, while the rest of the world wore mostly loincloths and "bedsheets" called togas. Silk was much prized by the rest of the world, until a lucrative trade route had been set up and named in honor of the precious material. Along the Silk Road, flowed Chinese luxury goods like silk, tea, paper, gunpowder, porcelain (precious china) which were in great demand throughout the ancient world.

@kelvinpang438 According to Human Rights Watch: Singapore (Source: hrw.org/asia/singapore ) "Singapore’s political environment is stifling. Citizens face severe restrictions on their basic rights to freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly through overly broad criminal laws and regulations. In 2017, the country tightened the already strict limits on public assemblies contained in the Public Order Act, which requires police permits for any “cause-related” assembly outside the closely monitored “Speakers’ Corner.”" - Human Rights Watch: Singapore Now doesn't that sound similar to China's form of government? Singapore been ruled by authoritarian single-party PAP for over 50 years, just like China been ruled by authoritarian single-party CCP for 70 years.

@sethtan6306 Exactly, Singapore’s authoritarian single-party PAP dictatorship provides economic stability for Singapore and that's why Singapore is so prosperous despite being in a stifling political environment for over 50 years. Just like China is prosperous under authoritarian single-party CCP rule for 70 years. I heard in Singapore, you can get arrested for gathering in groups of 4 or more on grounds of illegal assembly.

@sethtan6306 Did I lament the lack of Western democracy? I have been saying all along that Singapore’s system is similar to China's political system all along. Isn't it obvious in my previous comments? You're the one rashly jumping to your own conclusions, and putting words in my mouth when I never said such things.

@wheresmyeyebrow1608 China has 5000 years of history and is among the world's oldest "continuous" civilization still alive today, whereas other ancient civilizations like Mesopotamia, Rome and Egypt have since succumbed to history. China has witnessed the birth and death of various other nations, and the rise and fall of numerous other empires, yet China has survived the violent passage of time to modern times relatively intact.

@wheresmyeyebrow1608 Take Chinese characters for example and Chinese characters constitute the oldest continuously used system of writing in the world, having been used since 1200 BCE and today, Mandarin Chinese is the most spoken language in the world by number of speakers. Whereas other ancient scripts like Sumerian Cuneiform (Mesopotamia) Latin and Egyptian Hieroglyphs are considered dead languages today, because they are no longer evolving, and no new words being added to their vocabulary. @Harthorn China is a Western name given to our country named after Qin Dynasty. Of course China was not called China during Warring States period because Western English hasn't existed yet to call it China.
1
@Harthorn Ancient Chinese invented the Four Great Inventions (四大发明) which have greatly influenced the world through their respective areas. Paper and Printing made the transcribing and transmission of knowledge easier. The Compass made navigation easier and dangerous journeys safer and more reliable. And Gunpowder has revolutionised modern warfare.
1
@Harthorn China has always been under the authoritarian rule (and we still are today) of emperors and the imperial court, because that's how China has been governed for 5000 years. Our leaders have access to a wealth of political experience in form of political literature, military textbooks and government manuals in how to govern the world's most populous country so what makes you claim China was never China? Don't Chinese still write using Chinese characters today, whereas Sumerian Cuneiform, Latin and Egyptian Hieroglyphs have since fallen out of use?
1
@Harthorn What makes you claim Chinese inventions are no longer hold relevance today? People today are still using Chinese inventions up till today isn't it. With Chinese invention of paper, came inventions like paper lanterns, paper umbrellas and paper banknote (which made business transactions easier since merchants need not carry around lots of metal coinage and precious stones) Mankind's first aviation was in the form of paper kite, and even hot air balloons were invented in China, and were known as Sky Lanterns (天灯) or Kongming Lanterns (孔明灯) Here is beautiful video of RISE Lantern Festival in Las Vegas, celebrated with Chinese Sky Lanterns. Before there was 加油, there was an even older term called 万岁.

@sethtan6306 But majority of Singaporeans vote for the PAP all the same, just like the people of North Korea also vote Kim Jung un isn't it? And your current female President of Singapore (Halima Yacob) wasn't even voted into power at all, so Singapore clearly isn't a true democracy, no matter how people claim they have the right to vote. And majority of the Hong Kong protestors are high school kids who haven't even graduated from school yet they already think they know how to best govern Hong Kong? Their teenage minds haven't even matured, and they haven't even stepped out into the real working world of adults, yet they already got swept up in political fervor and throw away their bright future just like that.
1
@sethtan6306 When did I ever said Singapore is the same as North Korea? All I am pointing out is that majority of Singaporeans vote for PAP, just like North Koreans voting for Kim, that's all. And your President of Singapore wasn't voted into power. I mean, did you vote for Halima Yacob or against her? And even if you vote for the opposition, it is still PAP that has been in power for 50 years in Singapore. If your opposition party is lousy, then what's the whole point of opposition then? Might as well be a single party PAP and there will be no significant difference isn't it? A weak and incompetent opposition party might as well be non-existent, why bother having an opposition in the first place? Is the PAP clearly "tricking" you into thinking you have some semblance of democracy? Hong Kong had been under authoritarian British colonial rule from 1841-1997, during which Hong Kong did not enjoy democracy and virtually no elections were held by people of Hong Kong while it was British colony. Only during the period of Hong Kong handover back to mainland China that Hong Kong people finally get to vote in elections for their favourite leaders. So isn't it thanks to mainland China that Hong Kong people finally get democracy under the One Country, Two Systems Policy, when they had none before?
1
@sethtan6306 Did you vote for your President of Singapore? No? Did PAP rule Singapore for the last 50 years? Is your opposition party pathetic? Do Singapore citizens face severe restrictions on their basic rights to freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly? Then there's hardly any reason that Singapore actually qualifies as Western democracy isn't that right?
1
@sethtan6306 Excuse me, but when did I ever speak highly of Western democracy? And in my earlier question, when did I ever said Singapore is the same as North Korea? Why are you seemingly putting words in my mouth? Can you quote me my words, where I speak highly of Western democracy? Because I never said such things.
1
@sethtan6306 Again, when did I ever speak highly of Western democracy? Where did I ever said anything about Western democracy being superior at all? You are just putting words in my mouth when I never said such things. You can't even quote my words that spoke highly of Western democracy, so why are you making up things I never said?
1
@sethtan6306 Who's critiquing your system? Look this my first comment addressed to you @Seth Tan Exactly, Singapore’s authoritarian single-party PAP dictatorship provides economic stability for Singapore and that's why Singapore is so prosperous despite being in a stifling political environment for over 50 years. Just like China is prosperous under authoritarian single-party CCP rule for 70 years. So where did I critique your political system then? And how about quoting those words you keep on putting in my mouth, such as "Singapore is the same as North Korea" or that I spoke highly of Western democracy?
