For much of history, China always been economic power, according to Angus Maddison's research, claiming that from 1 AD to 1800s, China and India have world's largest GDP. Only in the last 200 years, did Chinese and Indian economies lose out to USA and UK. What China is undergoing today is actually more of a rejuvenation instead.

China had a chance to create colonies during Ming dynasty in 15th century, when Zheng He led seven far-reaching ocean voyages to the coastal territories and islands, such as India, Arabia, and even East Africa, and was pre-eminent naval power by projecting sea-power further to the south and west. The Chinese armada was massive and each ship was about 4-5 times the size of Columbus' Santa Maria, but ultimately it was merchant convoy, meant to increase trade with other countries instead. In other words, China had the opportunity to colonize other countries in 15h century, but chose to trade peacefully instead, exchanging gifts like silk, tea and porcelain (precious china) in return for exotic animals. Had China been truly expansionist back then, it would have created colonies in those countries, just like Western colonialism did in 17th century.

Chinese workers manufacture goods like smartphones, computers, appliances, sneakers, clothing, etc, in order to keep the cost of living in other countries lower. Think of the millions of dollars people have saved over the years on living expenses thanks to affordable Chinese goods. If Chinese goods are banned, there will be inflation in America and the cost of living will definitely increase due to lack of cheaper alternatives.

USA is often reluctant to switch to renewable energy, because many corporate giants in US government dominate the fossil fuel trade and want to keep their power. For example, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is ex-CEO of Exxon-Mobil, so it would be in his interest to keep the fossil fuel industry in US alive and to control the world's oil. China also has hunger for oil like USA, but because USA dominates the oil industry, China has no choice but to find alternatives, like renewable energy and to work to make them cheaper and competitive against fossil fuels. USA also has well established infrastructure like gas stations and petrol vehicles, and reluctant to switch to electric charging stations and electric cars, whereas China still development, and can easily incorporate more charging stations and electric vehicles into our development.

Hazzycakes If President Xi has shown to be capable of leadership, then I personally see nothing wrong with leaving him in power, in order to maximize the benefits to the country. Why can't competent leaders be allowed to stay in power? Such leaders are rare, and it would be a waste if he is removed from power, simply because of term limits.

How is it different from any other country with its own laws? Westerners always complain about rude Chinese tourists behavior, about poor traffic in China, cars running red lights and people jaywalking, peeing and spitting in public. With this social credit system in place, people will be discouraged from such behavior, and are forbidden from flying out of China to visit other countries too, at least until their score improves.

Nicki Myers China also has such laws in place against things like traffic offenses and spitting in public. But they clearly do not work, and Chinese people continue to break traffic laws and spit in public with impunity. So what's wrong with experimenting with a new approach that rewards good behavior and discourages bad behavior? Clearly, China is not the UK, and we should follow our own path to success and use our own approaches.

In Western countries, there are jobless people who live off government welfare and survive by collecting foodstamps, instead of actually getting a job. Meanwhile, the people who are actually working, pay taxes to support such a system. What China is doing is following a meritocratic system, where people are rewarded based on performance, and people who have a low credit score have to actually do something to contribute back to society

Snowden exposed that USA was tapping into communication lines and monitoring people's private conversations, so how is that much different from our system? Westerners always complain Chinese tourists are rude, noisy, about poor traffic in China, with cars running red lights and people jaywalking, spitting in public and other undesirable social behaviors. What this system hopes to achieve is to limit such people from traveling overseas and flying to other countries, at least until their behaviors improve and their social score becomes more acceptable.

Eric Sarnoski That's a rare comment, as many Westerners often expressed negative opinions about Chinese tourists. Nevertheless, one benefit of China's social credit system is that Chinese people exhibiting such undesirable social behaviors are only limited to China, and not allowed to fly out of the country until their score (and behavior improves) Its not a automatic dead end if your score falls below what is acceptable and there are ways to improve one's social score.

Hazzycakes China has many 5-year plans, 10-year plans, 15-year plans, 20-year plans, etc, in motion, to chart out China's future and to achieve specific goals by 2020, 2025, 2030, 2040, 2050, etc. For the government to achieve that, we will need a strong leader at the reins to ensure our plans aren't disrupted and to see those plans into fruition. But Western countries like USA, can only make short term plans spanning only about 4-8 years, because they are hindered by presidential term limits. Therefore, they only make plans that expire after their term is over, because they can't guarantee that they will remain in power to make long term plans.

eathenbad It should also be noted that China's territorial disputes do not result in bloodshed, unlike USA bombing countries in Middle East today. That's why China's rise is peaceful for 30 years, but USA still involved in wars in Middle East, even in 21st century. If China truly bloodthirsty like USA, the military option would be exercised long ago to solve our problems and disputes.

eathenbad My point that there is no bloodshed in China's disputes compared to USA. USA is world's superpower, so who would hold territorial disputes with it? USA annexed Texas from Mexico but what can Mexico do about it? Whether territory disputes or terrorism or other reasons, USA is still bombing countries in Middle East today, whereas China is peaceful and still open to talks regarding our territorial disputes. In my first post on this thread, I highlighted period in Chinese history where our naval power was supreme, yet China did not create colonies like Western powers. So why is it if Russia and USA disappeared tomorrow, China will suddenly take military action? China's presence is also preventing USA from taking military action in DPRK and creating unwanted war in East Asia, so why are you claiming my comparison is invalid?

Japan invaded Korea and China during Ming dynasty in 1592 under Toyotomi Hideyoshi with the intent of conquering the Korean Peninsula and China. Ming dynasty even dispatched Chinese troops to Korea to help aid in repelling the invaders. Next, Japan invaded China again during 1st Sino-Japanese war in 1894 resulting in Korea being occupied for 50 years. Lastly, Japan also invaded China during 2nd Sino-Japanese war in 1931, 8 years before Nazi Germany invaded Poland at start of WW2. So whose to say Japan won't invade China again in the future, following this historical trend? China has all the resources Japan never had, which was why they keep on invading China time and time again, no matter what time period. So who can also say whether Italy and Germany will become aggressive again in future? Italy was expansionist during Rome and also allies with Germany during WW2, and Germany fought in both WW1 and WW2, so following this historical trend, who knows if Germany may become aggressive in future too as well? I have provided many historical sources to support my claims, but all you do is make predictions without drawing upon any sources at all, so what makes you think your prediction about China is correct? China been peaceful, even when Ming dynasty had the opportunity to colonize during Zheng He's voyages, so again how is my statement or opinion so wrong in your eyes? So it was Manchu who invaded Han Chinese so why do you appear to be blaming Han Chinese here, when it was foreign dynasties like Mongolian Yuan and Manchu Qing dynasties that invaded Korea in the first place? You are blaming Han Chinese for what Mongols and Manchus did to Korea? Han Chinese tend to be peaceful throughout history, brewing and drinking tea, making silk clothing (Hanfu) and writing poetry and calligraphy using Chinese characters (Hanzi) If you don't believe me, then take a look at Maps of Han Chinese dynasties like Song and Ming dynasties and compare them to foreign dynasties like Mongolian Yuan and Manchu Qing dynasty. The Han Chinese dynasties tend to be non-expansionist and therefore, smaller area compared to the foreign dynasties, so who are you to start insulting me just because my views differ from yours? The concept of "Han Chinese" only created during Han dynasty, so why are you blaming the people who fought during 春秋戰國時代 as Han Chinese when the concept is only formed much later? Much of Han culture only formed during Han dynasty (hence the name) so why are you blaming the people during Spring and Autumn period in China as representive of China?
