I can vouch for one aspect of your experience, I ask young professionals I work with for the years of WW1 and WW2.... only foreign educated people know the dates....the British 20 somethings say that they didn't study History and therefore the question was unfair....proving both your point that they were failed by a weak education system and the fact that they have an abnormal sense of fairness and zero shame of ignorance...how many millions need to die before it becomes general knowledge rather than an academic historical fact??

@markhutton6055 the 70s were a long time ago....the kids educated in to 2000s, blair's generation, are the ones who are ignorant of general knowledge.

Hong Kong....they need the freedoms we used to have and might yet regain, and we need their brains and ambition. Either that or retired professionals who do a 1 year conversion course to learn a syllabus and they receive tax free pension income.

@markhutton6055 the fact that you are on this channel shows you are the exception and not the rule for the modern 20 something generation...I've asked the same basic question for 10 years...only foreign born getbit all right...tragic.

@soothsayer1964 it's tragic...theybhave no perspective of national history...they were never taught it at school and our national public displays of historical remembrance are watered down and co-opted by other topics....or so it seems to me. "Old people are gammon (racist and sexists and xenophones) to many youngsters...so why should they consider their lives"...is probably what they think...

@anonnemo2504 something about educated ex-colonial immigrants to the UK, they have an idea of Britain as it was... a place of laws and decency and respect. They soon become "educated" to this falsehood, but at least they still know that it once existed which is more than most kids know now.

cindybin2001 yep, seen them too...tragic. always wonder how much is edited...but I fear not much.

@cerdic6305 that's the problem, they don't understand context so they can't understand today...hence so many poor decisions by young people.

@cerdic6305 You assume that i was blaming the younger generation simply because I criticised their lack of general knowledge. Of course they are victims of the weak education their parents generation of teachers bestowed upon them.

@henghistbluetooth7882 No, I am comparing UK educated young adults' general knowledge with foreign (typically commonwealth) educated young adults. These facts relate to events so essential to understanding the current state of the nation that it is damninig of the parenting and teaching that these young UK adults have received. These are not what you appear to be perceiving to be some obscure facts from a classical education.
