I went to the ER a few years ago for a broken wrist and one of the nurses there said "Don't worry we're going to give you the good stuff, we're going to give you Fentanyl..." I don't know if it was because I'm black and in his mind he assumed I would be looking forward to drugs, but I'm actually the opposite so I started freaking out. I was like "What? Why the heck would you give me something like that? isn't that super strong?" The entire time people were trying to give me pain meds that I didn't really need. (yes I was in pain, but it was completely tolerable). I didn't even get the oxycodone prescription they gave me, because I just don't take pain killers unless I really need to. A few months after that I started hearing about an "opioid epidemic" and I wasn't surprised based on how this hospital was constantly peddling pain meds...

@jeffwolf8018 I'm pretty sure they weren't offering me microgram patches. In that situation it was going to be intravenously. It was that and morphine, like every hour I was there someone was offering me morphine.

@wittoist I'm sure. However the thing is most people don't live their lives in a hospital. The taste of meds they get, whether it's measured or not, sets people along a path of addiction and abuse. Doctors should use the bare minimum instead of always turning to drugs, and often the strongest ones, to solve everything efficiently based on the latest pharmaceutical sales pitch.

@wittoist Well a friend of mine just went into surgery for a minor ankle fracture and even with planning and anesthesia they doped her up with Fentanyl anyway. Even had her wear a patch for days to keep her from getting nauseous from all the medication. So my impression is of it being the "go to" drug out of pure convenience and expedience.
