Reminds me of the early days of the Daily Show that was mostly a just a comedy show but turned to serious politics following 911 and became a small source of alternative news/opinions amongst a sea of corporate media. It easy to see how Americans were detached from the Iraq War. When it was a country halfway across the world with a completely different culture, and no military draft. Yet to see the same propaganda being effective for a war that's happening right on their border in a country where a lot of people have friends and family is pretty amazing.

  37. David, you don't get it... The biggest problem here is being able to maintain a consistent vacuum across miles of track and varied terrain. Being able to suck out that immense volume of air is problem, being able to maintain that vacuum across MILES is a problem, being able to move vehicles and people in and out of the vacuum SAFELY is a problem. Being able to make a small electric car to speed down a track is not the problem... We have electric trains literally all over the world and they are pretending that this is solving something when the biggest problem has always been the idea of maintaining a vacuum that is on the scale of the great wall of china.... Not saying that there weren't problems with the EU, but cutting off your nose of to spite your face isn't the best solution. It seems like most people are simply voting against the "idea of something" instead of doing any kind of real cost/benefit analysis. The EU was solving a problem that stems back to WW2, by making an emotional knee jerk reaction to economic inequality and xenophobia they've already given more reason for Scotland to exit the UK and given much more power to Germany. They have not only sewn the seeds of their own economic downturn but also leading the way for a fractured Europe which very well may lead to serious conflict in the future. If all the states in the US were individual countries with their own currencies, military, commerce laws, immigration, etc. then we would be in a hot mess as well. There is nothing indicating that this is a good thing other than making people feel "warm and fuzzy" over an ideological and fantasized sense of control.

Millions of UK citizens are asking for a second vote because their economy is going to shit and they're having buyer's remorse after being told a lie about all the puppies and rainbows they would get if they left the EU. I have a friend in the UK who's in panic mode because his business is about to take a nosedive so he's thinking about moving back to the US. Which is going to cost a lot more because the pound has lost so much value. Personally I don't care because it's not my country, I may be able to start hanging out with my friend again if he moves back, and the way the pound is dropping like crazy visiting the UK will be cheaper than ever later this year. So it may be a good time to check out Scotland. Assuming that they're still part of the UK :-)

A vote to exit is a vote to basically double the regulations that many companies will have to abide by to sell anything in or out of the UK.... You don't vote on every regulation created by regulatory agencies, they vote for people to appoint people to those agencies.   128. Your analysis is absolutely flawed regarding money in politics.... You can't use the presidential primary to comment on the HUGE issue of money in politics. Presidential candidates get a lot of free coverage from the press, through debates, commentary, pundits, etc. Money has much more of an impact in the very beginning of a presidential campaign, because the press will not even pay attention to candidates who don't have a certain amount of money raised and those candidates will likely never see a debate. However money has a much bigger impact overall at the state and local level where there is far less free coverage for each candidate. Their was a study done a couple years ago that showed pretty clearly that the candidate with the most money were over 90% more likely to win the election. Furthermore politicians spend more of their time raising money than they do legislating. They literally spend all day on the phone with donors trying to raise money. Are certain donors going to more willing to give money to those candidates who share certain opinions and will those politicians change or alter their opinions based on the likelihood of raising money from those donors? You betcha.... Lastly there is the revolving door where politicians will turn into lobbyist or consultants for the same companies that have funded their campaigns for years. There is a huge conflict of interest when you're working towards a payday at the end of your political career.

I remember standing around with my friends a few months after Obama took office and we were talking about how he was a disappointment for escalating drone strikes. Libya was a mixed bag because there thousands of people who were about to get slaughtered. So there was a lot of debate on the left on whether we should intervene or not. Bernie Sanders represents the movement on the Left for defunding the military and pulling out of many of our engagements. This was also echoed by people like Tulsi Gabbard and Elizabeth Warren. However as of today there is no comparable movement on the Republican side at all. There used to be a decade or so ago with people like Ron Paul, but not today. They celebrated when we pulled out of the Iran Deal, they celebrated all the antagonism against Iran. They celebrated when we assasinated Soleimani Trump talked about pulling our troops out while at the same time talking about turning the middle east to glass... He dramatically increased military spending and allowed the CIA to make drone strikes against civilians with much less oversight.

All anyone on the left ever asks for is to count every vote and to not disenfranchise voters. Which happens every single election. At the same time, I worry that women like her with admitted mental issues may feel great and supported with all the attention and joy she's getting from "having a baby", but then when all of that is gone not really being able to care for the child properly. There are lots of kids who grow up being used as a crutch for a parent's mental issues and it's not a fun place to be.

My argument was specifically on tradition, that traditions change, sports change and that pretend fighting with plastic swords is not much different than pretend fighting with metal swords. Your argument was that fencing had some kind of french cultural significance and pretended that it was similar to Native Americans preserving their religion and traditions that are dying out. My argument is that it never came from France to begin with and that it's a sport developed across several countries therefore it is not significant or unique to french culture. I would appreciate it if you would stop making up ideas you want to argue against and instead address what I actually say.

It's simple, adding something new to a sport, doesn't somehow get rid of what already exists... The fact that Americans made pizza and apple pie and hundreds of other foods derived from European based foods that immigrants brought with them, doesn't magically mean that those European foods they were based on ceased to exist. Just because a guy opens an Indian fusion restaurant in London one day doesn't diminish the existing British cuisine. Just because US Irish Immigrants created an entirely new celebration of "St Patty's Day" derived from US style parades and celebrations mixed in with Irish traditions didn't somehow replace or diminish Irish culture or Irish people. In fact they liked the idea in Ireland so much they started celebrating it there I'm saying that the entire basis for that kind of thinking is utter bullshit. You can dislike something all you want (if I were an old guy doing something all my life I would probably dislike the "new thing" too), but suggesting something is wrong or should not exist "because tradition" is complete and utter nonsense.
