  2. When I was a gun owner many years ago, a number of the gun club members were "black powder men".... I remember watching them firing down a 300 yard range and in the correct atmospheric conditions you could actually see a "visual distubance" of the air travel down the range as the .54 (and LARGER) slugs used to trundle their way down to the target displacing a relatively large volume of air as they went. When you used to go down to the butts to mark a target you always knew when someone was firing a big muzzle loader as the low shots that struck the earth bank below the targets gave such a resounding bass "THUD" as they impacted, together with a healthy shower of earth that modern breach loaders seldom seemed to generate, and it ALWAYS brought home to me how traumatically destructive the impact of one of them slugs on the human body must be.
