As opposed to the USN who operated 80% of its units in the south western and central Pacific, The RN was dispersed across the globe and forced to cover the Arctic Ocean, North & South Atlantic, Indian Ocean & Mediterranean sea. The IJN was determined to expand the Japanese "Greater East-Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere" into the Indian ocean & to absorb India. The British were defending its holdings in the Indian ocean. The British victory was in keeping the its empire's shipping lanes free of the IJN, including routes from India rounding Cape of Good Hope and onwards to the UK, as well as supply routes from India to Rangoon keeping the British 14th Army in the war, and Allied troop convoys from India/Cape Town to Australia. Japan's failure was in not destroying the RN Eastern Fleet, and failing to expand into the region. The RN was operating half way around the world, and stood firm, retaining control of the Indian ocean. The IJN on the other hand tried to extend itself into a neighbouring ocean and immediately found itself overstretched and was forced to retreat. A strategic victory in the same sense as Jutland in the first world war.
