My guess is that although in a perfectly stable environment, a widely seperated pair of sensors or lenses would give a more accurate range, but in a practical installation aboard a ship moving potentially in stormy seas and winds, the physical seperation of the two lenses would also introduce a myriad of errors in its observations due to the flexing of the ship's hull.
