  2. My father served on her as a stoker during WW2. Using one of his "nine lives" at Salerno in 1943, he was "off watch" from her boiler rooms when she was hit abaft her funnel and near missed by another "Fritz X" glider bomb. She was towed to Malta for repairs, but not before breaking free from the tugs towing her and sailing SIDEWAYS through the Straits of Messina. That she was not saved post war in whatever capacity, is to this day a complete disgrace.
