@petej8556 Aye I remember Mr Holmes speaking on "The World at War" back in the day. And as you say what a kindly sounding, unassuming man of great bravery and yet immense humanity. Its easy for anyone with the eyes to see that ordinary mankind reached its peak during those times of hardship, nowadays we have been misled and corrupted by the evils of avaricicous global corporatism, with each successive generation being further and further "dumbed down" by the puppets placed to "lead" us (by the nose towards future slavery). I likewise mourn the passing of that great generation, having had the good fortune to have followed behind them, and been well acquainted with their like.

A tale of supreme sacrifice and a much deserved award of the VC. As was said in the film "Das Boot" by the "Kaleun" "those airmen could drop their bombs anywhere, and who would know"? Thank god for men such as Flying Officer Trigg.

The final acceptable tide (and the end of the preferable summer weather), rather than the optimal.

Typically a humble, understated type of man that doesn't seem to exist anymore.

@martinoleary5268 All empire troops were thought of as "coolies" were they? Does that include Gurkhas? and regiments of the erstwhile Indian army? Regardless of how the UK government thought of empire troops, anyone treating a Gurkha as dirt in particular would be on the receiving end of a kukri. BOTH were HIGHLY respected units of the British army amongst their peers. The UK government of course has treated them shabbily, but it also thinks little more of white British service personnel... my own father as well as millions of others served 6 years active service, he was seperated from his loved ones for all but 1 week of that time, faced death, injury & privation for almost the whole period (and they were the lucky ones) and were then handed a "demob suit" and told unceremoniously to "f*ck off". He fought for 43 years after the war for a pension (which wasn't backdated) for the lasting deafness he suffered as a result of being near a bomb blast onboard HMS Warspite off Salerno in 1943. The fight is not race vs race as those at the top push on us, but "the powerful few" vs "the masses". Wake up to it.

When you say "a navigational error" there had been numerous targetted raids within the boundary of "Greater London" the very boundary that Hitler had expressly forbade any attacks within. One such attack was the low-level "pinpoint" by Erprobungsgruppe 210 on RAF Croydon on 15th August 1940, when apart from hits to the station, surrounding housing estates and civilian factories were also hit resulting in the deaths of 60-70 civilians, over 200 others were injured and 17 of the dead were unidentifiable and buried in a mass grave at Croydon Crematorium.

And his memory as an honourable US citizen who used his own moral compass to do what he knew to be right, is still honoured by those of us Brits in the know.

The luftwaffe was the by its very nature the youngest of the 3 services, and was widely known to be the most politically affiliated (in this case nazi) of them all as well, not having the advantage of centuries old "Prussian" military traditions that preceeded nazism. The young aircrews had been brainwashed by growing up within the mandatory Hitler Youth Movement, They thought they were the "supermen" of Europe in their smart, Hugo Boss, uniforms, but met their match in the democracy of the RAF's prewar training programmes of all classes composed of men from many varied backgrounds within the UK, commonwealth, and then Europe's conquered nations.

I wonder if the last of Robert Zehbe's thoughts was "Why did I listen to that asshat Hitler".

@jetsons101 It goes like this. Great Britain consists of England, Scotland and Wales, effectively the British mainland (and small offshore islands). Northern Ireland is NOT a part of "Great Britain", but IS a part of the United Kingdom, as detailed on your passport where it says "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland".

The KV-2 in reality couldn't even fire its gun to the side as it had a tendancy to topple the tank over. Having a centre of gravity that high was a huge problem for it.
