  1. The idea of the sabot is to allow a larger surface area for the expanding gas of the propellant detonation to act upon. To obtain the same amount of imparted energy solely onto the much smaller surface area of the bottom of the dart itself would require a MUCH larger barrel pressure in a barrel the same calibre as the dart. The pressure required would be so great as to deform or blow the barrel itself apart.
