A contractor had not screwed a standpipe properly into a jumbo street hydrant, when opened the standpipe came off leaving a 30ft geyser spraying into the air. Another fireman and myself struggled and managed to turn off the hydrant to thunderous applause from the massed crown of bystanders. Funny the sort of shit you remember.
