When that force was released against secondary German forces in "Cobra" the Germans were then totally crushed within Normandy.

It was my intention to highlight how the British and Canadians who took the brunt of the German defensive reaction shielded the US forces from the worst of the fighting while the yanks themselves flailed about in the "Bocage" against mostly "stomach divisions" and were allowed to amass for "Cobra" in relative peace and quiet, something that is largely untaught to US commenters and even US military men. Witness the commander of the US VII corps himself, General Collins, in the epic British TV series "The world at war" opining that he didn't understand what took "Monty" so long in capturing Caen, ignorantly commenting that he believed it was because the "British were unwilling to take the losses that we, the US, were prepared to take". How crass, even for an American.

  18.  @GARYBLONDER  At the time of Dunkirk, the Kriegsmarine were still reeling from the losses of 1 heavy cruiser, 2 light cruisers, 10 destroyers, various U-boats, transports and smaller warships during "Operation Weserübung" and was in utterly NO state to confront the Royal Navy in its own back yard. Erich Raeder, whilst duty bound to follow Hitler's diktats, did EVERYTHING in his power to undermine & avoid having to oversee the naval aspect of "Seelöwe". Also in September 1940 RAF fighter Command was fielding more aircraft than it had in July 1940. And before you start with all the "if's" & "ands" remember, if my auntie had balls, she'd be my uncle.

  20. Let me correct your BS. Germany complained that the Sudeten Germans within the recently formed boundaries of Czechoslovakia were "being oppressed" (laughable now). The League of nations (the prewar united nations) decreed to hold an internationally observed "plebiscite" (or referendum) of the people in the region, to give them the choice of whether they wished to be part of Germany or part of Czechoslovakia. The completely democratic vote was for the Sudeten region to become part of Germany, which it did. The Munich agreement that followed was simply to say that France and Britain would not attack Germany for occupying the Sudeten region which had fully legally secceeded to them. The Germans then through the use of "soft power" assimilated the rest of Czechoslovakia as a nazi "protectorate" with its own puppet government, in much the same way as corporate globalism has subsumed national governments across the west in the last 40-50 years.

  32.  @gandigooglegandigoogle7202  Can I just say it is not my intention to undermine or diminish the tenacity and courage of the French pilots or indeed to question their skill and commitment during the battle for France, but likewise I do not like to see the same happen to the RAF pilots. Another large factor in the seemingly instant loss of air control during the battle of France was the almost complete lack of any form of command and control of the French l'armee de l'air, therefore requiring them to fly hugely inefficient standing air patrols, as opposed to the Chain Home / Dowding system that was the foundation of British air defence during the battle of Britain.   36.  @lorrainemapper7000  Hahaha.. please do explain how the French army saved the BEF? do you mean as the +150 divisions of the French army fell back southwards in chaos as the abandoned 10 divisiond of the BEF fell back on Dunkirk and launched the only real counterattack, then when the British 51st Highland division was placed under French command to help shore up THEIR crumbling defense it was abandoned by the French High command to be surrounded at St Valery en Caux? The small number of French troops that happened to be trapped north of the German thrust took their place in the defensive line, and of the 338,000 troops removed from Dunkirk over one third were French and Belgian troops.

It was the German's avowed intent to damage RAF Fighter command so heavily that it had to retreat north of the Thames Severn line, leaving the skies above the channel uncontested to maximise the slim possibily of a landing. RAF Fighter command completely prevented the Luftwaffe from achieving that aim, it was fielding more pilots and aircraft at the end of the battle than it was at the beginning, and was still defending the south coast of England when Germany indefinitely postponed its planned invasion in mid to late sept. QED A RESOUNDING British victory.

  44. There was never ANY chance of the Luftwaffe completely destroying the RAF. The aim of the battle of britain was to keep the RAF from south of the River Thames. That being the case how was the lufwaffe going to "wipe out the RN"? Check out how Herman Goering promised Hitler how the Luftwaffe would single handedly prevent the evacuation of the Dunkirk pocket by preventing the RN mounting a rescue operation. How did that go? A small number of RN vessels sunk in an English channel packed with RN ships, and 338,000 allied troops withdrawn from the pocket. Don't fall for all the wehraboo hype. There was NO chance of the nazis conquering the United Kingdom.

The British and Canadians took the BRUNT of the German forces coming from the Pas de Calais While the US struggled against a couple of "stomach battalions", the Brits & Canucks were facing MULTIPLE SS panzer divisions and the creme of the German infantry... thereby saving your yankee asses from being pushed back into the sea, and allowing you the luxury of building up your forces for "cobra".
