  33. Early Mk I Hurricanes (and very early Spitfires) were fitted with a wooden 2 bladed fixed pitch Watts propeller (effectively a carved solid wooden propeller). These were replaced squadron by squadron through 1939/40 by the De Havilland variable pitch three blade propeller with cast metal blades, these variable pitch propellers had only two settings "fine" and "coarse" which were set manually by the pilot. Eventually from August 1940 onwards they were phased out and replaced by "Rotol" Constant Speed propellers where the propeller blades (made of a composite wood/metal constuction called "Jablo") were infinitely variable and controlled automatically. The propellers can be thought of in a similar way to transmission gears. The 2 bladed wooden fixed pitch was rather like an old bike with no gears.... a single inflexible gear set to give the "worst of both worlds" for both top speed and acceleration. The 2 pitch De Havilland was like a car with 2 manual gears, low and high. The Rotol constant speed was like a fully automatic gearbox. The Rotol constant speed propeller was a MAJOR improvement to the aircraft they were fitted to.

  39. The Wehrmacht at Dunkirk captured amongst other things thousands upon thousands of unissued British Army uniforms. They couldn't be issued to German army soldiers for obvious reasons. What to do with them all? The answer? They were issued through out WW2 to German U-boat crews where they were unlikely to be mistaken for British soldiers in the middle of the Atlantic !!!

Sqd Ldr Canfield) during the battle were in the age range of mid 20s to mid 30s (Sqd Ldr R.N Clarke o/c 235 Sqd aged 36 years in 1940 & Sqd Ldr H.L HAYES o/c 242 Sqd aged 35 years in 1940 Sqd Ldr. V C F Streatfield o/c 248 Sqd aged 35 in 1940 being some of the older ones I could find ). Christopher Plummer at 40 years of age would have been overdue for a posting to a training or admin position (oh!!! just as he had been earmarked in the film before being shot down and disfigured). So not really too old after all.
