My uncle was during WW2 an RAF mechanic at RAE Farnborough. He was one day ordered at short notice to sit on the wing of a spitfire that was having it's cannons synchronised on the ground to help stabilise it from the resultant recoil... as he hurried to the aircraft he was not provided with ear defenders (or as it was known in them days "cotton wool"). When the pilot let rip with these cannon, Len (for it was he) fell from the wing with the force of the blast of the cannon. He was taken to the station medical bay with both his ears pouring blood, and was invalided out of the forces in 1942. If you'd like to get a small idea of what he was exposed to at very close range then watch this video with your speaker volume turned up to maximum.... (only joking) https://youtu.be/Oc9E8_ZuESQ

The MG FF 20mm cannon fielded by the contemporary Me109E had only SIX SECONDS of ammo before it was empty.
