@AWellRestedDog It's amazing how "backwards" a lot of our thinking of mathematics is compared to how it developed historically. Another fun "backwards" example is that logarithms came before exponential functions.

This is also a big reason why I, as a mathematician myself, believe that math is primarily invented.

What evidence exists that Napier used the number e explicitly? I'm genuinely curious to know! After a precursory search, I see Napier worked with logarithms, including the natural logarithm; however, that doesn't mean Napier recognized e as a number.

@shubhamchatterjee4642 I've heard a lot of people make claims like this, but I haven't seen documentation/historical sources about this sort of thing. (And to be fair, I don't ask much.) Could you direct me to evidence of how Indian mathematical ideas made their way to Europe outside of the traditional narrative of making its way to the Middle East and then being brought by Leonardo of Pisa to Europe?

@shubhamchatterjee4642 Thanks for your response, but I don't find it helpful. I am aware of the Kerala school, for instance, and have even brought it up to my students when teaching calculus in the past. Perhaps I was under a misapprehension or perhaps you have edited your original post, but I was under the impression that you had been saying that all Greek mathematics was stolen from India. For example, the key ideas behind Euclidean geometry had been stolen from India. But it appears this is not what you are saying.
