  2. Software engineer here. There are two types of updates: feature updates and bugfix updates. First ones add new features that may or may not have bugs. Second ones fix bugs. So updating some software from 1.9.5 to 2.0.0 will add new features but may add new bugs. Updating from 1.9.5 to 2.0.6 will be much smarter idea because it has 6 bugfix patches. Using old software is NOT a smart idea.

If you are trying to wrap your head around this - try using Python scripts on your PC. Then install Windows in a Virtual Machine (like VirtualBox) and install Python there. Then create a Snapshot of the VM (that's like a save in videogame) so you could load that state if you would brake something. Then try to modify scripts and see what happens. Scripts should do easy things like reading and writing text, creating and deleting files, download a file from the Internet. If you would like to do more - just google what you want to, watch (and repeat after them!) Youtube tutorials or read a book. At any time, you should understand 90-95% of code that you are working on. If it's not true - google that or use ChatGPT to ask what that code does ;-)
