The U.S. only fought against the North Vietnamese; it fought for the South Vietnamese people.

@joesaba386 , it was an agreed upon temporary split, by those governing in the north and those governing in the south, with a reunification planned for after an election that never happened—because one side wouldn’t agree to hold free and fair election. So, by default, Vietnam self-divided into two separate countries. The agreements concluded in Geneva between April and July 1954 (collectively called the Geneva Accords) were signed by French and Viet Minh representatives and provided for a cease-fire and temporary division of the country into two military zones at latitude 17 °N (popularly called the 17th parallel).

So is the right to defend yourself when attacked.

Who changed the rules in Russia, allowing Putin to stay in power—unopposed—for thirty-plus years???

@user-op9ys2zb5z , just keep in mind that Ukraine has not joined NATO or the EU, has not built military bases of any sort, nor has invited western nations to bring and set up missiles, etc. Ukraine has taken no action of any sort. But Russia has. Russia attacked Ukraine and started a war over nothing done by Ukraine. Btw, rewind the tape: Putin said that Russia was undertaking a special military operation to demilitarize and deNazify Ukraine. Then it morphed into liberating eastern Ukraine oblasts and protecting native Russian speakers. See how the reasoning for this war keeps changing?! Of course the real reason is reabsorbing Ukraine back into the Russia fold so that it can have more warm-water ports. Also, the recently-discovered gas and oil reserves would also be nice, amirite? But it looks like Ukraine isn’t giving all of that up without a fight.

@Vit_Kon , Putin and Medvedev simply swapped places for the sake of appearance; we all know who was in charge. This term Putin was just reelected to ends in 2030; but as you indicated the law/constitution was changed and he can “run” again and will ultimately serve until 2036— for a total of thirty-plus years. Anyway, the Russian people ultimately do get the government they deserve.

@first_1112 , in January of 2020, during a national address broadcast, Putin promised two key political reforms: limiting the president to two terms only, and transferring power from the Kremlin to the Duma. Decades of polling suggest Russians like elections and the trappings of democracy. There was a lot of discontent expressed by Russians online in reaction to the move. But, hey, it’s up to the Russian people if they want to secede all that power to one person.

@SerbanOprescu , so much for liking the people but hating government. Russians are in lockstep with their government, with 88% of the people approving of their government’s actions.
1
@yellowsheeps , you mean exactly how Russia is attempting to invade Ukraine (yet again) and trying to take even more of Ukraine’s territory and resources, right? I agree.

@leivabernie , The United States and Vietnam share strategic interests, particularly on the economic side. U.S. trade with Vietnam topped $130 billion in 2022, with export markets in both directions. It has taken time to get to this point, but most would describe the current relationship between the two nations as a positive one.
1
@leivabernie , I’m not claiming it’s ever going to be perfect, but it is on its way to be as strong as the relationships it has with Japan and Germany.

@alanr2609 , Cambodia said it was “neutral” but harbored the Viet Cong and allowed it to launch offensive attacks from its territory. The bombs dropped were targeting the VC, not the Cambodians. Anyway, the Khmer Rouge rose to power from North Vietnam and killed about one-third of the Cambodian population, so they have a lot of people to be angry with. But I agree that the U.S. should’ve stayed out of Vietnam, just the same as I believe Russia should’ve stayed out of Ukraine. But, that said, any country invading another country’s borders ought to be prepared for what may await them.

@BlueEagle0264 , if I were to take a swing at you, your immediate response would prove my point.
