The U.S. only fought against the North Vietnamese; it fought for the South Vietnamese people.

@joesaba386 , it was an agreed upon temporary split, by those governing in the north and those governing in the south, with a reunification planned for after an election that never happened—because one side wouldn’t agree to hold free and fair election. So, by default, Vietnam self-divided into two separate countries. The agreements concluded in Geneva between April and July 1954 (collectively called the Geneva Accords) were signed by French and Viet Minh representatives and provided for a cease-fire and temporary division of the country into two military zones at latitude 17 °N (popularly called the 17th parallel).

@yellowsheeps , you mean exactly how Russia is attempting to invade Ukraine (yet again) and trying to take even more of Ukraine’s territory and resources, right? I agree.

@leivabernie , The United States and Vietnam share strategic interests, particularly on the economic side. U.S. trade with Vietnam topped $130 billion in 2022, with export markets in both directions. It has taken time to get to this point, but most would describe the current relationship between the two nations as a positive one.

@leivabernie , I’m not claiming it’s ever going to be perfect, but it is on its way to be as strong as the relationships it has with Japan and Germany.

@alanr2609 , Cambodia said it was “neutral” but harbored the Viet Cong and allowed it to launch offensive attacks from its territory. The bombs dropped were targeting the VC, not the Cambodians. Anyway, the Khmer Rouge rose to power from North Vietnam and killed about one-third of the Cambodian population, so they have a lot of people to be angry with. But I agree that the U.S. should’ve stayed out of Vietnam, just the same as I believe Russia should’ve stayed out of Ukraine. But, that said, any country invading another country’s borders ought to be prepared for what may await them.
