Protesting and marching, and collecting signatures on a petition, as well as supporting and electing like-minded politicians are important, but they’ll not be effective if the government isn’t open and transparent. Russia doesn’t have an open and transparent government of politicians elected to represent the will of the people. And, in all honesty, the Russian people do not express a willingness to fight for such a system. Anyways, for the few that are willing to fight, they need to resort to civil disobedience tactics. But with a state like Russia the consequences for civil disobedience will be harsh. However, economic boycotts are something they could —and should—consider. Whether or not they would work is questionable.

I understand there is an area that China disputes is theirs, but other than that I’ve not heard of any country ever mentioning wanting to invade or attack Russia. Help us out to better understand exactly who—and why—Russians think they might come under attack.

So the answer to your first question: NATO will oppose any and every country that is not a member of NATO and attacks any member of NATO. As for your second question… NATO does not solicit memberships. Countries approach NATO and ask to join. And why do they ask to join? To better defend themselves against possible aggression. They see big aggressive countries invade smaller nations and ask to join before they become attacked.   16. Genetics is the biggest factor. Avoiding bad habits like smoking and junk food are definitely going to affect one’s health and longevity. A healthy diet and a moderate amount of exercise will help you out a lot. Having access to good doctors and healthcare certainly are helpful, too. The West hasn’t been greedily keeping these secrets from Russia.

  23.  @benediktioakim  , this CIA-funded operative was a high-profile opponent of Putin’s that was sent to a high-security prison located in a remote region, correct? Russian prisons are highly-secured: nobody can sneak out—or in. Especially when located in the arctic circle. The CIA couldn’t reach Navalny if they wanted to. And if they could, they would have wanted to spring him out, not kill him. No, Navalny was just another of Putin’s opponents, and he met the same fate as most of the others. (If you think the CIA did get in and killed him, then the guards, the warden, heck, the head of the FSB all deserve to lose their jobs. Watch to see if anyone is punished or not for this; that’ll tell you what to think.)

But every despicable thing we hear about happening on the ground we have heard about in past wars involving Russia. But you go ahead and put your support behind the guy who said for months, “No, we have no intentions of invading Ukraine. We are only conducting planned military exercises,” all the while amassing 100,000 troops on the border. Go ahead and trust they guy who passes laws saying you cannot use the words “invasion” and “war” when talking about this invasion and war. Go ahead and continue believing the guy who is trying to enforce “agreements” that were never formally written and signed, while he ignores ones that were. Russia invaded a sovereign nation, is committing genocide and making a land grab. Ukraine asked for help and just about the entire world is behind it.

  31.  @alexmiller23  , I’m in the US, but I’m sure that things are similar for Canadians and Europeans: we have elections every other year, they are carefully monitored and are fair and free, and the politicians we elect do a pretty good job at representing desires of the majority of the population. (We mainly vote for candidates, hardly ever on specific referendum questions.) However, most of the problems we face are complex, and so a bunch of us are never satisfied. We do all seem to have the freedom to address our grievances with our governments though, something Russians don’t seem to be able to do. The New York Times just published a story about how there’s a sharp increase in Russian citizens getting arrested for not being patriotic enough. Yikes! Western populations don’t worry about such a problem.

Putin is trying to wrestle a hornets nest from the tree, but he has little means to manage the angry swarm inside. He created a quagmire for Russia. On top of that he cratering Russia’s long term economic future. And he didn’t stop NATO expansion, he simply sped it up—right up to Russia’s borders.

  39.  @asukaayanami  , the sanctioned assets will likely be used as leverage to make Russia pay for reparations. And, yes, the Russian population will bear the brunt of the cost. The Russian people need to rise up and hold their leaders accountable. Ukrainians did just that with their 2014 Maidan Revolution. They got tired of the corruption and did something about. Russia should do the same.

  42. Sanctions were imposed in order send a message and change Russia’s behavior of aggression towards Ukraine. However, many Russians continually point out that the sanctions are not effective and that Russia has adapted to the sanctions, so the entire point is moot.

  44.  @eliasziad7864  , I don’t know about the other NATO countries, but much of what the US has been supplying Ukraine with is older versions of weapons from our stockpiles. We Americans believe it is Russian hackers who are tricking US workers within companies and small local governmental agencies into divulging passwords and/or giving access into computer systems. As for swaying our elections and/or helping Trump get elected, no, that wasn’t Russian hackers, it was Russian troll farm operations that spread fake news stories and conspiracies on social media, which many gullible Americans believed and shared with one another. Those weren’t computer hackers that did the latter.
