These people were just intimidated and defrauded and coerced into joining russia, so why would you expect them to be able to differentiate a foreign benign poll vs a fake occupying sting operation to root out dissidents? Why would you expect them to take the risk, not just know the difference? You try getting a panicked, impoverished person to do an obscure academic question that they don't know if it's a trick or not to imprison them. dates and square brackets isn't what imparts credibility - it's quality thinking and facts.

  5. ​ @horatio1962 that's the bias of states historically. They're primarily concerned with maintaining power and control over territories and people, so reciprocity and voluntary divorce/secession/separation is an afterthought and doesn't get explicit addressing in legal documents and decrees.
