This sounds very much like trickle down technology. But I'm willing to get a left leaning channel like this will staunchly say trickle down economics doesn't work. Just think about it from first principles. You don't necessarily need military spending first. If military spending spawns research, and that research the gets applied to civilian applications... You can obviously skip the military research part. Duh. All you need is for the research to get done, with SOME highly incentivized or profitable application in mind. Such research would then get applied to other applications as well. Research often is a core scientific principle, which always has multiple uses. You can always argue that the first application needs to get done first in order to do other applications. It can be any application that motivates the research to get done.

what if communist countries don't actually believe in communism, but it's just a pretext for power. What if it's the west that dislikes communism, but the communist states need to rep communism in order to stay in power. clearly they don't believe in it, as they don't have any of it. the real motive is just "how do i make my country and my power great". other communist allies just tend to be so because of communism, the same way democracy or islam or mandate of heaven or the papacy held things together and fosters alliances.

4:50 You paint a very incomplete picture. Yes NATO prescribes a % of GDP spending, but you're not accounting for economic growth. It's possible that absolute spending has grown or stayed the same, and is just a smaller percentage because of GDP increase...
