  1. I always find it easier to think of this in terms of corner distance (which keeps on increasing with dimension) compared to side distance which does not. I draw the box with the distance to the corner rescaled to the distance to the higher dimensional corner. the box gets distorted into a star with the corners very far away and the sides still 1 away. Placing a 1 circle at the corners and the touching inner circle clearly shows that the inner circle escapes the bounds of the sides of the box but sill ends up 1 away from the corners.
