Britain used to be mainly forest, even up to WWII. I met a veteran who told me after WWII people just started cutting down the forests. The reason is that we did not have enough arable land to produce food and we had to rely on food from the continents. 2 years into WWI and the German u-boats had sunk every vessel. We had no ammunition and no food. We had lost. The Americans turned everything around. But following that people must have decided we needed to be self sufficient. If we go back to being dependent on the continent, we are done for.
