The problem I have with Charles’ argument against science is that he uses the science of climate change as his foundation. If science is not to be trusted then his argument has no basis. Furthermore, the science of climate change is controversial in itself. Alternatively, if climate science is legitimate, and he argues that science is not the solution, then his argument is again inconsistent. It is if he wants to say don’t follow the science unless it is climate science.

You may be correct, but people have to do their research in order to know their enemy.

I watched the whole speech and I didn't notice any significant change in Trump's demeanour. And that is a good thing. It shows the strength of his character that he narrowly dodged death, literally, and remains unchanged. I know another recent leader who had a brush with death and his policies did change, Boris Johnson. His actions after contracting covid where a disaster for this country.

Saudi Arbabia has not renewed the petrodollar pact, they are now able to sell oil for any currency they wish. Oil is the only commodity that remotely backs the dollar. Without that backing nobody needs dollars. If it loses the reserve status then there are trillions of dollars with little value. The currency will collapse.

I'm thinking what a conversation Iain would have with Donald Hoffman.

Agreed, David Frost is the only interesting member of the Conservatives but he won’t or cannot lead the party.
4
His argument is absolutely paradoxical.

And Rupert Sheldrake as well.

@SamuelJFord Hoffman and McGilchrist sound as if they would disagree, but that would make the conversation even more interesting.

Of course transgender women are not women, otherwise why would they use the prefix trans? Take trans as a synonym for fake.

@saimak7079 The pact was never with China. It is a deal made between America and Saudi Arabia in 1974.

People would have stayed at home even if there were no lockdowns? No, I didn’t even when there was a lockdown. Gove is a liar and a snake. The governments measures have caused economic collapse.

Conservatives have been captured by woke because they are all about disseminating power out of state and into private enterprise. But the left have an answer to that - fascism. It's really just socialism where power is given to private businesses that are aligned with the socialists, instead of power being overtly centred in the socialist state. And that is exactly what we have. From private companies to NGO's, they are all aligned with socialist policies.

The storytellers wrote warnings about the technological future but people were only excited by the dangerous future, instead of fearful. Why? Because we are adapted to the challenge of adversity, overcoming nature to survive. So as we devise technology to conquer more of nature, we loose purpose, then we crave more danger and excitement.

We are more than computers.

It’s interesting how we have recently failed to keep technologists from dominating. Back when the developed world was electrified, there was opportunity there for electricity suppliers to become the ruling class, after all, we are very dependent on electricity. But you don’t find electricity suppliers banning American presidents from using the electricity network. So how is it we have allowed the purveyors of less essential technology to have such power over us?

We had a whole history semester on the history of Russian. Went from the royal family, through the Bolshevik revolution, through Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin. It managed to include little bits of related events as well. Our history teacher was very commendable in that respect. I enjoyed it despite it being difficult at the time and only wish I could remember more of it.

I don't see the number of new cases per day in Britain coming down. It has plateaued for the last month. 5/4/2020 - 5903 new cases, 30/4/2020 6032 new cases and nothing but figures that vary between 4000 and 5500 in between. You could take that two ways. 1. Lockdown has had no effect so we should continue with lockdown. But that presupposes that lockdown will have a positive effect sometime in future. 2. Lockdown has no effect so it cannot be justified.
1
This lockdown is not going to work anyway because the supermarkets are open and everyone need to go to the supermarket so the virus will spread through there. That's why it is having no effect.

@rumination2399 What makes you think human civilisation is not compatible with sustainable ecology? What makes you think we are less able to live within the parameters of the environment than any other species? Does a plant think about the consequences of consuming carbon dioxide from the air? The vast amount of coal would suggest they do not.
1
@rumination2399 I find it a bit too egotistical to proclaim ourselves stewards of the earth. Really I think it is true that the planet can sustain a certain level of activity by the population, and that the population will rise until it reaches that limit, then it will hover around the limit. And that is why it is too egoistical to think we are stewards, in charge of the planet. It has the final say, not us.

The socialists class drug addicts as victims, but they don't want to do anything about the dealers. Are they going to say that everyone is a victim and society is at fault? That's the socialist line. It seems they simultaneously promote society while excusing all the ills in the world on it.

The fear about nationalising energy and infrastructure is all about power and who has it. Someone will own these organisations, and whoever it is can be just as afflicted by greed and corruption as any other. The point is, how much power does the consumer have over the supplier?

We can all play this game. All we need is a similar organisation that we report woke commenters and websites to, and anti-woke organisation use that information to avoid them.

He promote acting on impulse then reviewing the actions afterwards. But by then it is too late, you cannot turn back the clock. Thousands dead and debt up to our eyeballs. Now we need to rapidly increase gdp and the quickest way to do that is to bring in more migrants. Hence the open door policy of Truss.
