The southern slave owners were democrats were they not? Would not vote for Abe Lincoln the republican because he wanted to free the slaves. Don't they have a lot to hate themselves for?

@IncoherentClam Things we cast into the shadow do not have to be our own actions though, they can be the actions of others. How would you integrate the practice of slavery? I mean I see what you are getting at but some things belong in the shadow.

@IncoherentClam But what is the answer? Again I get what you mean, it is easy to cast everything you don't like into the shadow until until it's like a closet full of skeletons but again somethings are unacceptable. Now the left are notorious at the moment for cancelling and ignoring anything they don't want to confront. My thoughts on this are that we should go as far as discussing things we don't like, slavery, paedophilia, abortion to name a few but that's to remind ourselves of why they are in the shadow already (apart from abortion). Pulling down statues that remind us of past bad behaviour seems to me to be the opposite. It's just an attempt to erase the past. Which is stupid because it was not even perpetrated by people or to people today.
