  1. What was the benefit of gain-of-function research? It's a massive risk that a virus will escape, but surely that risk is supposed to be greatly offset by getting a head start on such viruses? So why did a vaccine not come sooner? Did China have a vaccine and that's why they were apparently not badly affected? Why am I the only person asking this?
