  1. What makes the scientists think that a naturally occurring virus would be even close to one made via gain-of-function? Because a vaccine for a gain-of-function virus would only work on a naturally occurring virus if they were almost identical. I don't see the value of gain-of-function. Yet research into these viruses was performed and a pandemic came about with no immediate vaccine available. So again, what really was the benefit of doing this research?
